Air Exchanger (HRV) Replacement in Halifax: Cost, Lifespan, and Whether You Actually Need One
An air exchanger and an HRV are the same thing — "air exchanger" is simply what most Nova Scotians call a heat recovery ventilator. As a planning estimate only, replacing one where the existing ducting is sound commonly runs about $2,500–$4,500 installed in Canada, while a first-time installation that needs new dedicated ducting more realistically lands in the $5,000–$7,500 range and can exceed it in a large or complex home. HRVs are commonly quoted at a 10–15 year lifespan, and a well-maintained unit can reach 20. But before replacing anything, check the cheap causes: a large share of air exchangers written off as dead turn out to be a clogged filter, a fouled core, an iced-up intake, a seized damper motor, or a unit that was never balanced after installation — service work, typically a fraction of replacement cost. These are estimates, not quotes; the unit, the state of the ducting, and how much has to be rebuilt determine the real number.
If you've been told your air exchanger needs replacing, start with the useful part: it probably doesn't.
Most of the units we get called about aren't dead. They're clogged, iced up, blocked at the outside hood, or were never balanced properly on the day they were installed. That's a service call, not a new machine — and it's a fraction of the cost. So this guide covers the diagnosis before it covers the price, because the diagnosis is where the money is.
Then, when replacement is the right answer, here's what it actually costs.
Everything below is a planning estimate, not a quote — drawn from Canadian cost data as of mid-2026. The scope of your specific job determines the actual cost, and the biggest variable is how much ducting has to be built, not which unit goes on the wall.
First: air exchanger and HRV are the same thing
Worth clearing up, because it causes real confusion when quotes come in under different names.
Air exchanger is what most people in Nova Scotia call it. HRV — heat recovery ventilator — is the trade name for the same machine. It exhausts stale, damp air from bathrooms and the kitchen area, draws fresh air in from outside, and passes both streams through a core so the outgoing air hands most of its heat to the incoming air. You get ventilation without simply throwing your heating out the wall.
An ERV is the variant that moves moisture as well as heat. It's a different tool for a different climate problem — more on that below.

Before you replace: the things that are usually actually wrong
An air exchanger that has "stopped working" is, more often than not, one of these:
- Filters packed solid. The most common cause by a wide margin. They're meant to be cleaned or replaced a few times a year and frequently haven't been touched in years.
- A fouled core. The core pulls out and washes. A dirty one strangles airflow long before it fails outright.
- A blocked exterior hood. Intake and exhaust terminations outside collect lint, leaves, snow and nests. A blocked hood shuts the system down as effectively as a broken motor.
- An iced-up core. After a hard cold snap, units with a failed or misconfigured defrost cycle can freeze. It presents as no airflow and it isn't a dead machine.
- A seized damper motor. A replaceable part, not a replaceable unit.
- Controls that were never set up. A surprising number of units are installed, switched on, and never commissioned — no balancing, no run schedule, sometimes not even wired to a working wall control. It has "never worked well" because it was never finished.
- Ducting to the wrong rooms. The unit runs fine, the house still feels stale, because the fresh air is being delivered somewhere nobody sits.
None of those needs a new machine. Several of them are an afternoon's work.
What replacement actually costs
Two very different jobs get called "getting an air exchanger":
Replacing an existing unit, where the ducting is already run and in decent shape, commonly runs about $2,500–$4,500 installed. You're paying for the machine and a day's labour. The ducting — the expensive part of the original install — is already paid for.
A first-time installation, where dedicated fresh-air and stale-air ducting has to be built from scratch, is realistically $5,000–$7,500, and a large, multi-storey or awkwardly laid out home can go beyond it. Published Canadian figures spread widely for exactly this reason: a basic retrofit tied into existing furnace ductwork and a fully ducted system in a big house are barely the same job.
Roughly how it breaks down:

Certified HVAC labour in Canada generally runs $100–$200 an hour, which is why a job that needs two days of duct routing through finished ceilings costs so much more than a same-day swap.
We've framed these toward the higher end deliberately. We'd rather you budget generously and come in under than plan around the cheapest number online and get caught short.
What moves your number:
- How much ducting has to be built. The dominant factor, by a distance.
- Whether it ties into existing forced-air ducting or needs its own dedicated runs to bedrooms and living space. Tying in is cheaper; dedicated ducting works better.
- Access. Open basement versus finished ceilings is the same story it is with all ductwork costs — you're paying for time in awkward spaces.
- HRV or ERV. ERVs generally cost more.
- Unit capacity and quality. A larger home needs a bigger unit, and the cheap end of the market is where the ten-year failures come from.
- What the old install got wrong. If the previous ducting was undersized or run to the wrong rooms, fixing it is part of the job — and skipping that is how you end up with a new machine that performs like the old one.
How long they actually last
10–15 years is the commonly quoted lifespan. In practice:
- A unit whose filters and core have genuinely been maintained can reach 20 years.
- A neglected unit often doesn't make 10. The motor or damper usually fails first.
- Cheap units fail early, and they fail at the motor.
Age alone isn't a reason to replace a machine that's still moving air properly. Past 15 years, struggling, and never serviced — that's when replacement is the honest answer rather than the profitable one.
Repair or replace: the actual decision
The economics are simpler than they look:
Repair when the unit is under about 12 years and the failure is a discrete part — a damper motor, a control board, a fan. These are replaceable and it's the sensible fix.
Replace when the unit is past its lifespan and the motor or core has failed. A major component repair can run well over a thousand dollars, and putting that into a machine with two years left is money you'll spend twice.
The deciding factor is the age of the unit, not the price of the part on its own. A $1,500 core in a 6-year-old machine is a repair. The same core in a 16-year-old machine is a down payment on a replacement.
HRV or ERV for a Halifax home?
For most homes here: HRV.
Nova Scotia's problem is a heating-dominated climate and damp winters. You want the moisture out of the house — that's exactly what an HRV does, and it's why foggy winter windows are the classic symptom of a house that needs one.
An ERV transfers humidity along with heat, which is genuinely useful in climates fighting summer stickiness, and counterproductive when your winter problem is a house holding too much moisture. It also costs more.
There are exceptions — very tightly built homes that end up uncomfortably dry in winter can benefit from an ERV. But the default here is an HRV, and anyone recommending the switch should be able to explain specifically why your house is the exception rather than reaching for the pricier box.
The step almost everyone skips: balancing
Here's the thing that separates an air exchanger that works from one that just runs.
An HRV has two airflows — the fresh air coming in and the stale air going out — and they have to be measured and balanced against each other. Out of balance, the unit either pressurises the house (pushing warm damp air into your wall cavities, which is precisely the moisture problem you were trying to solve) or depressurises it (pulling air backward down flues and in through every gap).
Balancing takes instruments and time, and it's the step that gets dropped when an install is priced to win. It's a large part of why so many homeowners describe a working unit as "never really doing anything."
If you're paying for a new air exchanger, ask whether commissioning and balancing are in the quote. If the answer is vague, that's your answer.
Where the ducting matters as much as the machine
An air exchanger is only as good as what it's connected to. The failures we're called out to fix are frequently duct problems wearing a machine's clothes:
- Fresh air delivered to a hallway instead of bedrooms and living space.
- Stale air pulled from the wrong end of the house.
- Flex duct crushed, kinked, or sagging enough to strangle the airflow.
- Uninsulated duct running through a cold attic, condensing and dripping.
- Exterior hoods too close together, so the unit inhales its own exhaust.
Replacing the unit without fixing any of that buys you a new machine with the old performance. If the original install was rough, the replacement is the moment to correct it — and that's ductwork, which is our actual trade.

Ventilation is a system, not one box
An air exchanger doesn't work alone. If your bathroom fan is dumping into the attic or your range hood was never vented outside, you're generating moisture problems faster than any HRV can clear them.
When we look at a ventilation complaint we look at all of it — the exchanger, the exhaust fans, the terminations, and the ducting tying them together. Fixing one and ignoring the rest is how people end up disappointed with an expensive new unit.

My air exchanger isn't working — do I need a new one?
Probably not, and this is worth checking before you spend anything. The common causes of an air exchanger that seems dead are all cheap: filters packed solid with dust, a core fouled enough to choke airflow, an exterior intake or exhaust hood blocked by lint, snow or a bird's nest, an iced-up core after a cold snap, a seized damper motor, or a control that was never set up properly when the unit went in. Any of those present as "it stopped working." A genuine end-of-life failure means the motor or the core itself has gone on a unit already past its lifespan. Have someone look before ordering a replacement.
Can I replace just the core instead of the whole unit?
Sometimes, and it's worth asking. Cores and motors are replaceable parts on most units, and on a machine that's otherwise sound and not yet at end of life, a part swap is the sensible repair. The economics turn around when the unit is already 12–15 years old — a major component repair can run well over a thousand dollars, and spending that on a machine with a couple of years left rarely makes sense. The deciding question is the age of the unit, not the price of the part in isolation.
Should I replace my HRV with an ERV?
In most Halifax homes, no — replace an HRV with an HRV. An ERV transfers humidity as well as heat, which helps in climates fighting summer stickiness but works against you in a Nova Scotia winter, when the whole point is getting moisture out of a damp house. ERVs also typically cost more. There are cases where an ERV is the right call, usually in very tightly built homes that end up too dry in winter, but the default here is an HRV. Anyone recommending a switch should be able to say specifically why your house is the exception.
Do I really need an air exchanger at all?
If your house is tight — newer construction, or an older home that's been air-sealed during a renovation or a heat-pump conversion — then yes, functionally you do. Moisture from showers, cooking, laundry and breathing has to leave the building somehow, and a house that no longer leaks it away will put it on your windows and in your walls instead. Foggy windows through the winter are the usual first symptom. In a draughty, un-renovated older home the need is less pressing, because the house is ventilating itself inefficiently through every gap.
